Web Marketing

Marketing on the Internet has become a top priority for many businesses as they toil over strategy that can get their Website viewed.  Despite the rhetoric and claims of expertise in this area by self-proclaimed gurus, Web marketing is still more of an art form than an exact science. Discussions about Web marketing can appear confusing since it invariably covers many different technical topics.  Below is a brief outline of some of those topics:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Google and Yahoo! has become synonymous with the term 'search engine' and are typically the first stop for many Web users. For this reason, one of the most important aspects of Web marketing is search engine ranking. However, the method used to rank Websites on these search engines are heavily guarded secrets and they constantly undergo modifications. Web marketing consultants will employ various techniques to improve rankings, but the process itself usually involves trial and error.

Web Advertisement - Advertisement on the Web has been the driving force that has fueled the growth of the Internet.  For many, they are a nuisance, but for the advertiser, they can be extremely effective.  One of the most effective types are search-driven advertising provided by the likes of Google. Sponsor links will be displayed on the search results page triggered by keywords the user types into a search engine.  Ideally, this method directs the ad message only to those who want to see it.  The downside is that it can be expensive.

Cross Promotions - It pays to connect with other Websites that are inter-related to the product or service that your business offers.  Often times, a favorable mention of your products or services by another Website will lead to an instant increase in traffic translating to real sales.

Miscellaneous - Other strategies may include mailing lists, seasonal promotions and affiliate programs.  The choices depend greatly on the type of business that is being promoted.
